A Cotswold man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his mother.

Matthew Corry of High Street in Chipping Campden, appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates Court today (January 9) to confirm his name, address and date of birth to  District Judge Nicholas Wattam.

Corry, 45, is charged with murdering his 84-year-old mother Beatrice Corry on Friday, January 6 at Chipping Campden. He did not enter any plea to the charge.

Wearing a grey top and with unkempt curly hair he told the court he had been a teacher for some 20 years and had attended both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He said he was "a good person."

Prosecutor Sue Gethin explained that Gloucestershire Police were called to the home of Corry and his mother in High Street Chipping Campden during the early hours of January 6.

The police found Beatrice suffering from head injuries and that despite medical intervention, she ultimately died from her injuries.

The court was told that Corry was suffering from mental issues and that he had been seen by psychiatric specialists since his arrest along with Terry Sprason the liaison officer from the Gloucestershire mental health services.

Mr Corry claimed he had been diagnosed with bipolar disease.

Peter Eguae, for Mr Corry, said that he was not in a position to represent his client today as he needs assistance with his mental condition.

“I don’t have any instructions to proceed any further,” he said.

Corry was remanded in custody to appear at Bristol Crown Court on January 11.
