ONE of Pershore Tennis Centre's longest-serving members Derek Humberstone celebrated his 90th birthday on court after more than 70 years of playing the sport.

Humberstone was presented with a cake and card at the club’s weekly Saturday tennis social session.

His wife Audrey said: “Derek has enjoyed and is still enjoying his regular tennis and is always eager to play.

"Since then he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and can't drive. He does appreciate the kindness of fellow members of the centre in transporting him back and forth."

Humberstone started playing in Finchley, north London, before becoming club captain in his early 20s.

In 1974 he moved to Gloucestershire where he played at employers Central Electricity Board and was captain again.

When Humberstone retired in 1988 he moved to Little Comberton and first played at Evesham Rowing Club and later at Pershore Sports Club before joining the centre when it opened.

Head coach Steve Bauer said he continues to demonstrate "remarkable accuracy, poise, finesse and competitive savvy on the court".

Of his longevity on court, Humberstone put it down to “a good marriage, talent, a bit of luck and hard work".

He added: "I've always played to win, doesn't everybody?”
