EVESHAM United finally delivered some Christmas cheer to their home supporters with a first win in eight Jubilee Stadium games.

Normally a strong home side, Paul Collicutt's Robins had struggled for a success at headquarters in all competitions since beating Barnstaple Town 2-0 on September 23.

But they warmed the hearts of their supporters during the festive season by beating Larkhall Athletic 2-0 in Evo-Stik Southern League Division One West.

Right from the first whistle, the hosts set about showing they meant business, creating several half-chances in the opening minutes with their opponents only touching the ball when the Robins made a poor pass.

The visitors looked to have set their stall out early on to try not to concede.

Evesham were limited to a series of long-range shots despite their dominance in possession until the 24th minute when Nick Rhodes hit the bar.

The rest of the first period saw Evesham continue to create several more half-chances but nothing to unlock a resolute Larkhall defence.

The second half started exactly the same as the first.

The opportunities kept coming for Evesham and Matt Bennett's header from an Adam Mann free-kick skimmed the bar in the 48th minute.

Just a few moments later, the ball was fizzing across the visitors' goal but nobody in red and white stripes was able to finish it off.

With the home side's hold on the game getting ever tighter, it seemed like it was only going to be a matter of time until the defence would be beaten.

In the 57th minute Mann made one of his trademark runs into Larkhall's box only to be brought down and Evesham were awarded a penalty.

Up stepped Matt Liddiard who placed his shot wide of Shaun Semmens in the Larkhall goal much to the relief and delight of the home fans.

Their joy was doubled in the 71st minute when a superb passing movement between Jordan Bryan, Lewis Binns and Lewis Powell was rewarded.

Powell's shot into the bottom left corner gave the keeper no chance.

Evesham new boy Aysa Corrick, on as substitute, looked like he was going to make a dream debut but his shot was turned around the post in injury-time.

The performance gives Evesham every reason to be optimistic of hauling themselves back into play-off contention.
