RECENTLY described in the New York Times as “one of Britain’s very best choirs”, Ex Cathedra will be in concert tonight at Hereford Cathedral. The programme of glorious choral music includes favourites like Away in a Manger, the tranquility of Sally Beamish’s In the Stillness and the lush harmonies of Stars by ?riks Ešenvalds – performed complete with tuned wine glasses. An unexpected selection of readings provide food for thought and sprinkle a touch of humour.

Artistic director and conductor Jeffrey Skidmore said: “The Christmas message of peace and love is as relevant and important today as ever. The power of music and words, especially at this time of year, to please, to inspire and console, to enhance and refine our search for happiness, justice and truth is fundamental to human existence.

“Candlelight programmes always reflect the past year. In the year in which we celebrated Shakespeare there is a strong British element, our green and pleasant land. A further strand is European repertoire from France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Sweden and Germany. Music and readings from Mexico, the Middle East, the USA, Brazil, India and Australia add a global element - there are seven languages from thirteen countries.”
