COTSWOLD residents are being reminded to remember the famous slogan again this festive period.
The Dogs Trust slogan, 'A dog is for life, not just for Christmas', has been around for nearly 40 years but the dog welfare charity continue to see dogs abandoned after the festive period after the appeal of a puppy wears thin.
West Oxfordshire District Council is urging people to remember the slogan, as it still sees around 100 dogs on the streets locally every year, which have either been lost or abandoned.
Councillor Carol Reynolds, cabinet member for environment, said: "Dogs are wonderful pets and great companions, but looking after them is a huge responsibility and there is a cost involved which should be factored in.
"I urge anyone considering buying a dog as a Christmas present to think very carefully and take advice from charities such as the Blue Cross or Dogs Trust first."
Once a stray dog has been collected by the council it is taken to council-appointed kennels and owners have seven days to claim the animal.
During this time they will be charged for kennelling and other costs such as vet’s fees. If unclaimed, the stray is usually rehomed through an animal rescue centre.
It is also a legal requirement to microchip dogs, as this helps the authorities to quickly reunite lost dogs with their owners.
To report or claim a stray dog, call West Oxfordshire District Council on 01993 861000.
