INITIAL design proposals for a major £6 million development project at Gloucester Cathedral have been completed and are awaiting the public's view.

The cathedral is keen to gauge how people feel about the designs and is asking for feedback which can then be used to develop them further.

Project Pilgrim is a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve and restore specific parts of the cathedral ensuring it can fulfil its role as a place of dynamic spiritual, civic and heritage activity and play a key role in the regeneration of Gloucester.

Following a generous first-round Heritage Grant of £320,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the cathedral has been able to take its vision to the next stage and a team of specialist consultants has been working hard behind-the-scenes to turn the project concepts into cohesive designs.

The proposals include the removal of the car park to create an iconic public space in the Cathedral grounds, a new glass entrance and an exhibition area in the Tribune Gallery.

The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester said: "Gloucester Cathedral is a place for everyone so it is important that the people of the city and county have an opportunity to let us know what they think of the changes we are proposing to make to their cathedral. We invite everyone to help to shape the project by taking part in this important consultation."

The plans will be displayed in a special exhibition in the cathedral nave until April 20 and on the cathedral website and people can offer their thoughts by completing a questionnaire online.
