A COTSWOLD woman will celebrate becoming a centenarian tomorrow.
Evelyn Hewitt will be marking her 100th birthday at Mowbray Nursing Home, Victoria Road in Great Malvern, where she now lives.
Born in the village of Guiting Power in 1913, Mrs Hewitt was the eldest of five children, with just her youngest sister still alive to celebrate alongside her.
She met her husband at a Saturday night dance at the Lygon Hall in Broadway and the two were married at St Peter’s Church, Bengeworth, in 1936.
Her husband Ted Hewitt, who died in 1984, was well known in Evesham and the couple spent their early married life in Bengeworth where they had two children, Tony and June, who went on to give them five grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
They moved to Hampton in the 1960s where Mrs Hewitt lived until moving to the care home when she was 97.
She was well-known in the Hampton area, particularly for her Scottish terrier dogs and voluntary work with Meals on Wheels. Closely associated with the local church and the Mothers’ Union, Mrs Hewitt had many friends in the area.
She was also a collector for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
She will be celebrating with a family party tomorrow and again on Saturday with friends and neighbours.
