OUR November meeting remembered the First World War The Horses. Our speaker Robin Hill told us it was soon realised that horses would be more mobile in the mud than wheeled vehicles. The horses were purchased at approximately £100 per animal and they would only take a few off each farm, a large number of horses came from the USA and Canada. As the war progressed they built in Northern France large towns and saw mills to cut the timber for the trenches and walkways. By 1917 to feed the horses 70,000 tons of hay per month was needed and 1,300 vets to look after them and in the whole war sixty million horse shoes were used. Robin also told us how gas was a major issue to affect the horses and at the end of the war only the Officers horses came back. Robin was thanked by Edward Hird for telling us so much unusual information about the first world war.

Visitors are always welcome at our meetings at Pershore Football Club in the Function Room on the first Thursday of the month at 7-30 pm. Our December meeting on the 4th is our Christmas mulled wine and mince pie meeting with a talk Worcestershire Inn Signs and Pub Names by Anthony Collis.
