The Rollright stones, which are on a high ridge three miles north of Chipping Norton, were the target of vandals 42 years ago.
Eight of the 77 stones which comprise a circle were ripped from the ground.
One was later found on the road beside the site.
The stones are possibly of greater antiquity than Stonehenge and almost unique in the country because they have been placed close together instead of at regular intervals.
