There were more than 500 entries for the third annual Moreton-in-Marsh spring horse show 35 years ago, which included new sections for hacks, dressage with jumping and young stock.

The Journal of 1975 reported: “The show had to be postponed from Easter Saturday because of the weather, and conditions looked far from promising on the revised date, when all the vehicles had to be towed in.

“Normally, it is the getting out that provides the problem but the ground dried out well during the day and the exit proved far less difficult than the entrance had done.

“There were so many entries for the new young stock class that it had to be divided into two sections.

The Captain Bell cup for the best working hunter pony went too Mrs J Bucknell’s Tonto, ridden by Alison Bucknell, with Mrs C S Holt’s Katy of Kent, ridden by Kirstie Holt, reserve.

“The West Midlands cup for the best show pony went to Mrs J Bucknell’s Rotherwood Peep O’Day, ridden by Deborah Radbourne, with Mrs D B Morgan’s Rosevean Signet Ring, ridden by Joanna Morgan, reserve.

“Ponies that qualified to compete at the BSPS championships at Peterborough in September were: Mrs D B Morgan’s Cussop Shadow and Rosevean Signet, Mr and Mrs P Judge’s Whatton Gladiator and Mrs J Randall’s Treharne Verbena. The hack championship went to Mr D. Tatlow’s Clarissa, with Mrs Hayes’ Lady Elise reserve, and the young stock cup to Mr and Mrs Judge’s Sholbourne Majic Flute, with Mrs Morgan’s Greenacres Symphony reserve.”
