FIVE teenagers slummed it in Chipping Campden to raise nearly £1,500 for Haiti’s earthquake victims.
Chris Gibson, 18, Jack Gibson, 14, Fleur Parker, 16, Joe Bent, 19 and Sean Harris, 16, raised the money, for the Tear Fund for Haiti Appeal, by being sponsored to sleep rough like many Haitians have been doing since the earthquake destroyed their homes.
The youngsters braved freezing temperatures while spending two nights sleeping rough in a temporary structure made of pallets and cardboard boxes, which they constructed in the garden of St James’ parish church’s offices at Little Glebe.
Accompanied by St James’ youth worker, Sarah Parker, and her husband, Howard, they ate only lentils and a portion of rice each day, which is all many Haitians have had to live on since the earthquake.
They also toured Campden’s shops, collecting sponsorship money, distributing leaflets about the appeal and discussing their project.
The youngsters were inspired to do this by the success of the Slum Survivor project, which saw four of them raise about £3,500 for the Tear Fund two years ago by sleeping rough in The Square, Campden for two nights.
Sarah said: “It was pretty cold.
“I was so proud of them.”
