A 150-year-old cedar tree in a Cotswold village is at risk of being removed by a housing association.

Residents of Mickleton have been rallying together after Bromford Housing were attempting to remove the tree.

The cedar tree, which stands on the corner of Granbrook Lane and Cedar Road, is being fought for by residents and Cllr Tom Stowe, Cotswold District Councillor for Campden and Vale.

Cllr Stowe says the attempt from Bromford Housing to remove the tree was "mob-handed"

He said: "On Monday I was contacted by residents son Grabook lane and Cedar Road saying that there were tree surgeons on sight attempting to cut down the tree.

"Bromford had not consulted with residents about the work and turned up mob-handed to remove the tree.

"If not for great community spirit and resilience, the tree could have already been removed by now."

Cllr Stowe was able to negotiate a temporary halt in the work, to find out more information about why the tree was to be removed.

He said: "I told the residents to ask the workers to stop until I arrived and was able to get more information.

"I was told that apparently, the work was due to roots causing problems with neighbouring properties but when I spoke to neighbours that were not the case.

"When talking to the workers it came out that a fungal problem with the roots was the actual issue.

"I have been discussing with Cotswold District Council about getting a tree preservation order granted on the cedar tree."

Angela McEwan, resident of Granbrook Lane, echoed Cllr Stowe's fears, stating how sad it would be to lose the tree.

She said: "This tree is hundreds of years old and is perfectly healthy. To remove it would be criminal.

"It would be very sad to see it go."

Worcester News has asked Bromford Housing for a comment but it has not responded to our request.
