A CHARITY football match has raised more than £5,000 for the Warwickshire Firefighters Families Fund.

The match in memory of the four firefighters killed in the warehouse fire at Atherstone-on-Stour on November 2 was organised by staff at DCS Europe in Stratford, where one of the retained firefighters, 27-year-old John Averis from Tredington near Shipston, worked.

John, nickenamed Amos at work, was a Wolverhampton Wanderers fan and colleagues managed to get Wolves to donate a signed team shirt with the name Amos on it.

DCS Europe chief executive Denys Shortt presented the short to John's parents, Philip and Kathy, prior to the match at the NFU in Stratford earlier this month. (dec) Stars playing in the ex-pros team included David Busst, Des Bremner and Ricahrd Sneekes.

Cyrille Regis was unable to play due to a knee injury but met the afternoon meeting the firefighters' families and signing autographs.

Dion Dublin ran the auction, raising £1,000 from the sale of two of his Celtic shorts.

The match was a one-sided affair with the ex-pros winning 15-1 but the highlight of the match was the DCS Europe goal scored by John Averis's brother Paul.
