THE majority of primary schools in the Cotswolds have shone in the recently released primary school performance figures for Key Stage 2, with the whole county performing above the national average.

Leading the pack are two schools which achieved a score of 100 per cent where 15 children in Year 6 with 15 at Mickleton Primary School and 16 at St Catherine's RC Primary School, in Chipping Campden, received top marks at level four in reading, writing and maths.

In the north Cotswolds, the majority of schools achieved 81 per cent and above. The exception being St David's Primary School, in Moreton with 74 per cent, a slight reduction on last year's figure of 76 per cent, and Stow Primary School, with 20 children in Year 6, which had slumped from 92 per cent in 2014 to 65 per cent; the lowest minimum requirements set by the Government last year when schools would be considered to be underperforming. The national average this year is 80 per cent.

At the time of going to press, Rebecca Scutt, headteacher at Stow Primary School, was unavailable for comment.

Adrian Webb, headteacher at Mickleton Primary School, said staff were proud of the Year 6 pupils' achievements and were thrilled to be one of the top performing schools.

He said: “We are delighted that the school continues to go from strength to strength. We are extremely proud. This has been a fantastic year for the school as we have also achieved the national PSQM Science Gold Award.”

Cllr Paul McLain, cabinet member for children and young people said, “I am very pleased that Gloucestershire’s primary schools have continued to perform so well and have achieved above the national average yet again. Their success is a tribute to the hard work of our staff, governors, pupils, and of course the behind the scenes support of parents and carers. I know that school staff won’t be complacent and will continue working hard to maintain and improve standards for pupils in all schools. ”

Other primary schools achieved the following: Blockley, 82 per cent; Bourton-on-the-Water, 91 per cent; Gretton, 92 per cent; Isbourne Valley, 90 per cent; St James' and Ebrington, 82 per cent; Temple Guiting, 88 per cent; The Rissington, 89 per cent; Winchcombe, 81 per cent.
