A CHIPPING Campden bookshop owner is encouraging the whole community to embrace "Civilised Saturday" as an antidote to Black Friday, on November 27, which, historically, has kicked off the Christmas shopping season.
The Independent Bookshop Community is planning for Saturday November 28 to be the 'civilised' day to encourage people to go local and support independent bookshops.
However, Emily Dunn, of A Festival of Books, is trying to get the whole town on board to create a great event for all retailers, not just book shops.
"I thought, why just bookshops? Civilised Saturday is intended as a restorative to Black Friday, the now-traditional retail scrum that kicks off the Christmas shopping season. It is the chance to create events, then invite customers in to let them recover (or escape) from Black Friday, to spend relaxed time in a calm space, to offer great gift ideas, give advice and recommendations and reinforce Chipping Campden as a great place for Christmas gift buying," she said.
A Festival of Books specialises in children's books but has a 'grown-ups' corner and has just celebrated its first anniversary.
