KNOWN to the locals as "God's country" the Cotswold village of Broadway is a desirable place to live.

But the quintessentially English village has become so popular one of it's streets is among the most expensive to live in the country outside of Greater London.

In figures released by Lloyd's Bank Church Street in Broadway, part of which is within the Cotswold Way, has an average house price cost of £1,154,000.

This places it fifth in the West Midlands, behind Tiddington Road in Stratford upon Avon at £1,313,000, Rosemary Hill in Sutton Coldfield, £1,268,000, Westfield Road in Edgbaston in Birmingham, £1,179,000 and Vicarage Hill in Solihull at £1,175,000.

Streets in London topped the list with a typical Grade II listed house on Grosvenor Crescent in Belgravia, will cost an average of £16,918,000.

Despite this Broadway's parish council chairman says people from London, Birmingham and other cities would often love to live in the village he calls home.

Cllr David Folkes said: "Broadway is genuinely a very expensive village for houses. That's why we have had council houses and social housing built.

"People that have been living in London or Broadway they would be very pleased to come to Broadway.

"Us locals, well I certainly, call it God's country. We have lovely views and all the rest."

The village has also boasted famous residents with David Hasselhoff rumoured to have been looking at properties in Broadway in September after visiting the Cotswolds.

Due to its popularity with outsiders Broadway has also become a favourite tourist destination, and Church Street has its own fair share of places to stay.

Cowley House Bed & Breakfast, run by Peter and Joan Reading is one of those on Church Street.

Mr Reading said: "We were surprised to learn this fact but when you think of the location abutting to the beautiful village of Broadway and the village green and its easy access to the Cotswolds. Part of Church Street also lies on the Cotswold Way. It has a lot of features attractive to buyers.

"We have recently been targeted by three London estate agents within the last ten days, with London money for people trying to invest outside of the capital.

"We moved to Broadway nine years ago and we have been developing Cowley House Bed & Breakfast for nine years having moved down from the North West and we consider ourselves extremely lucky to live here."
