ONE of the country's leading archaeologists will be giving an illustrated lecture in Blockley at the beginning of July.

Professor Timothy Darvill works at Bournemouth University and is the author of more than a dozen books, including The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Archaeology.

His latest book, titled Stonehenge: The Biography of a Landscape has created much interest as it seeks to redefine the origins of the Wiltshire site. Professor Darvill suggests that the ancient monument was a source and centre for healing and not just a place for the dead. His previous work on Gloucestershire long barrows means that his Blockley talk called Stonehenge to Condicote - West Country Henges is likely to produce some interesting facts about Britain's archaeological treasures and sites. Professor Darvill's visit to Blockley has been organised by members of the Blockley Church Restoration Appeal working closely with the village's Antiquarian Society.

The venue for the evening will be St George's Hall Blockley. It takes place on Wednesday, July 4 at 7.30pm. Tickets can be bought at Blockley Post Office or by reserving by telephoning 01386 700283 or 01386 700402.
