EVESHAM United hit back from behind for a 5-1 midweek victory over Wantage Town and climbed to second in Southern League Division One South and West.

Two goals for Mark Magee and sub Lance Smith made it 10 straight league wins and 11 unbeaten for Paul Collicutt’s men.

But the Freds had a penalty superbly saved by returning keeper Kevin Sawyer and went ahead through Mark Francis in the 25th minute.

The Robins regrouped, scoring twice before the break and three times in a one-sided second half at the Jubilee Stadium.

United looked out of sorts early on and a tug by Nick Stanley on Elliot Powell in the 19th minute gave Wantage the spot-kick but Sawyer denied Francis.

Francis made amends when sloppy defending allowed him to fire the lowly visitors ahead.

United improved with Magee firing into the side-netting and having another shot blocked after good work by Paul Fahy.

Evesham levelled on 39 minutes through the impressive Magee, who took advantage of a poor back-pass to round keeper Eddie Cavanagh and slot home.

Cavanagh saved from Magee’s curler before Liam Harding met Lorcan Sheehan’s corner with a superb header.

In the second half, Sheehan’s header struck the bar and Harding’s goal-bound header was cleared by James Glover.

After the hour, strong pressure ended with Magee bursting into the box before finishing into the far corner.

Top scorer Smith then came off the bench and tapped in from close range after a run and cross from Lewis Binns.

Two minutes later, Smith became the division’s leading scorer when he sprinted through and rounded Cavanagh before rolling the ball into an empty net for his 19th goal of the season to complete another impressive display.

The Robins host reformed Salisbury on Saturday in the league (3pm) before visiting Didcot Town on Tuesday (7.45pm).
