MAY I, through the Journal, advise any readers who do not already do so to check their utility bills carefully.

I paid a set monthly amount to Npower until I decided to change supplier at the beginning of November last year.

Since then, it has taken three months, several long telephone calls, emails and a letter to them before I finally managed to agree my final account.

They have produced three different bills, taken further money from my bank, and even credited money to my account which didn't come from my bank.

One 'final' bill noted that I owed about £20, but when I checked it they had not taken into account the discounts available for having both gas and electricity and for paying by direct debit.

It has taken a long time, but I finally got them to agree that they owed me £80.

Some people I have told this to say that they would not know how to check their accounts, and would generally just pay what was asked of them.

I would advise anyone who is unsure to ask someone they trust to check their bills for them.
