SWAN Lane First School’s caretaker Johann Importante officially re-opened the school’s atrium today.

Head teacher Graham Walker asked Mr Importante, from the Philippines, to do the honours as his quick thinking saved the Evesham school from certain disaster after it was targeted by arsonists in July.

Work had been going on all summer to rebuild the atrium, a play area linking the two reception classes.

New flooring and a new roof has been put in, and reception teachers Victoria Gent and Amy Logan gave up much of their summer holiday to assess the damage and ensure that new furnishing and play equipment were replaced in time for the start of the autumn term.

The only difference now is that a metal guard now encloses the whole area which will prevent anyone being able to enter it in the future.

The school viewed this an absolute necessity to prevent the same thing happening again.

Mr Importante has also worked non-stop throughout the summer break, and the school have said they are indebted to him.

Mr Walker said: “I am delighted to invite Johann to officially re-open the atrium.

“The senseless arson attack has caused thousands of pounds worth of damage and a massive amount of work for everyone involved.

“I would also like to express my thanks to McLennan Builders for carrying out the repair work, to Cliff Dawson and Roger Carter from the Local Education Authority for supporting us, and to all the parents and friends of the school who have donated toys and equipment to help replace those lost in the fire.”
