Opener Mark Stoneman was dismissed early on day one of England’s first NatWest Test against Pakistan.
Stoneman’s place in the team was in doubt before the series, having averaged just 16.42 during his first four matches of the County Championship campaign, and an early failure will put more pressure on the Surrey opener.
He made just four runs before being bowled by Mohammad Abbas with the last ball of the fourth over, leaving England 12 for one.
Joe Root, promoted to three in the batting order, joined his predecessor as skipper Alastair Cook at the crease but almost made an instant exit.
Before facing a ball, Root survived a run-out attempt when Faheem Ashraf’s throw from mid-off narrowly missed the stumps with the Yorkshire batsman well short of his crease.
Root had earlier won the toss and elected to bat under grey skies in the first of the two-Test series.
