On an occasion in which Ed Wilson’s side needed a win to hang on to any chance of Metro Bank One Day Cup qualification, the Rapids failed to defend their total of 219, despite digging in well against a strong Northamptonshire Steelbacks side at the cinch County Ground.
Ella Claridge (49) anchored the Worcestershire innings; however, astute Steelbacks bowling ensured the visitors struggled to assert any sort of authority on the match’s early proceedings.
Setting their hosts 220 to win, Northamptonshire’s top-order showed their class, frustrating the Rapids’ attack and making them wait until the 21st over for the opening breakthrough courtesy of Clare Boycott.
Although Meg Bishop and Amy Griffiths then went on to claim two wickets apiece, this proved too little too late, as Worcestershire’s play-off-chasing opposition romped away to a five-wicket victory
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, the Rapids faced immediate pressure from Northamptonshire's bowlers, Mabel Reid and Emily Carpenter. They made it tough for the Worcestershire openers, Clare Boycott and Gwen Davies, who found scoring difficult. Boycott was dismissed for just one run in the second over, bowled by Carpenter with a delivery that moved sharply. The Rapids were soon 46-2, with Madison Windeatt also falling cheaply.
Claridge joined Davies, and the pair steadied the innings, with Claridge playing some elegant shots and finding the boundary regularly. However, Davies was bowled for 39 in the 15th over, leaving the Rapids in a precarious position.
As wickets continued to tumble, Claridge held firm, and with Sanya Khurana, they managed to guide the team to 132-4 at the halfway mark.
Khurana’s promising innings ended when she was bowled for 27, and soon after, wickets fell rapidly. Claridge, who was nearing her half-century, was eventually dismissed LBW for 49 off 69 balls. Late contributions from Emily Churms (30*) and Jess Beach (19) helped push Worcestershire past 200 runs, finishing at 219.
In response, the Steelbacks started confidently, with their top order quickly building a strong partnership. The Rapids struggled to find a breakthrough until Clare Boycott finally dismissed Amelia Kemp, who had been batting well.
Meg Bishop and Amy Griffiths also took two wickets each, but the damage was done as the Steelbacks continued to chase down the target.
Despite a late resurgence from the Rapids, the Steelbacks, led by a quick-fire 29 from Gemma Marriott and a solid performance from May Drinkell, who ended with a half-century, sealed a comfortable five-wicket victory.
Ed Wilson’s side now faces a two-week break before they conclude their One Day Cup campaign at home against Gloucestershire on Sunday, September 6.
