Worcestershire Women’s Rapids claimed a commanding six-wicket victory against Sussex Sharks at New Road, keeping hopes of Vitality Blast T20 qualification very much alive, as Ed Wilson’s side displayed a dominant display with the bat.

Led by Captain Clare Boycott (3-23), the Rapids bowlers impressed, having restricted the visitors to 25-1 from the powerplay, before eventually finishing on 120-6.

Madison Windeatt then enjoyed another standout performance with the bat in just her second Rapids appearance, leading Ed Wilson’s side to 45-1 from the powerplay.

Gwen Davies returned from injury to contribute a fluent 41, as Windeatt finished on 46, having spearheaded a resounding six-wicket Worcestershire win.

After winning the toss, Boycott chose to bowl first, a decision that paid off as the bowlers quickly got into their rhythm.

Youngster Caitlin Baker-Smith made a notable contribution by helping to run out Molly Adams for just six runs. As the innings progressed, Sussex’s opener Izzy Collis, who had previously scored a century against the Rapids, looked to stabilise the innings alongside Shristi Patil.

However, the Rapids finally broke through in the 12th over when Amy Griffiths lured Collis into a mistimed drive that was caught at extra cover by Boycott.

Boycott’s leadership shone through as she took two more wickets in quick succession, leaving Sussex struggling at 90 for 4. Despite a late push from Patil, who scored 37, Sussex could only muster 120 runs, thanks to tight spells from Meg Bishop and Lucy Harris.

Chasing 121 for victory, Madison Windeatt opened the batting with Amy Griffiths. Although Griffiths fell early for seven runs, Windeatt quickly found her footing. Returning from injury, Gwen Davies joined Windeatt and made an immediate impact, smashing three boundaries in one over to help the Rapids reach 45 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.

Davies scored a brisk 41 runs off just 21 balls before being caught while attempting a reverse sweep. Windeatt continued to anchor the innings, showcasing her talent with some elegant shots. She looked set for a half-century but fell just short, scoring 46 runs off 49 balls.

At 117-4 with four overs remaining, Boycott and Liv Gough came together to see the Rapids over the line, in what was an all-round outstanding display from the homeside, who claimed the six-wicket victory in front of a jubilant New Road crowd.
