Youngster Lucy Harris remained upbeat despite Sunday's defeat in a standout County Cup campaign.

Worcestershire Women’s Rapids exited the competition at Himley after a 74-run loss to Surrey.

The match marked their first-ever outing against Tier One opposition, and Harris believes the Rapids have plenty to be proud of after their run in the tournament.

She said: "It has been really nice, a few weeks ago here against Northumberland, then away at Leicestershire where Caitlin smashed it, and obviously back here today.

"It was always going to be a tough ask, and I feel like the better team did win.

"We wanted to go out there with loads of energy and show a Tier One side what we are all about and that we can compete."

The Rapids restricted a strong Surrey line-up to 171-7 with a disciplined bowling display.

Harris led the attack, taking 3-38 - her best figures since joining the club during the close season.

In the absence of some regular starters over the weekend, Harris and her fellow bowlers stepped up to the plate valiantly, with fellow youngster Caitlin Baker-Smith impressing once again.

Worcestershire’s chase was hampered by regular wickets, despite determined efforts from captain Clare Boycott and Ebony-Jade Tweats, who both scored 23.

Harris praised the team’s performance and highlighted the challenge of facing higher-tier opposition.

She said: "Boycs’ run out showed it and I thought we bowled really well, it is just hard against Teir One sides who have an ability to hit the ball everywhere."

She also reflected on her own journey and the opportunity to make an impact for the team.

After a quiet start to the season and having to wait patiently for her opportunity, she was delighted to be able to repay the faith shown by Ed Wilson.

She said:  "I feel like I haven’t quite shown Worcestershire what I can do.

"So, I was really keen to show that against my former side, especially as a few of them used to coach me and I have played with them.

"To be able to do that today and grab a few wickets was really good fun.

"There is always a bit of room for improvement, but I will keep working hard and hopefully we can take the good bits from today into our next few weeks and go again."
