Worcestershire completed a deserved five-wicket victory over Gloucestershire on the final day at New Road in Division Two of the Rothesay County Championship, writes Harry Wilcox.
The Pears laid the foundations for success through a superb first-innings recovery before Fateh Singh’s maiden five-wicket haul helped wrap up victory and secure a valuable 22 points.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Gloucestershire recovered from 35-2 thanks to a century partnership between Cameron Bancroft and Miles Hammond. Bancroft made a patient 52 before Beyers Swanepoel broke the stand and quickly removed James Bracey.
Hammond remained resolute throughout, scoring an outstanding 139 as Gloucestershire posted a total of 289. Swanepoel was the pick of the Worcestershire attack with 5-64.
Worcestershire’s reply also encountered early setbacks. Although Jake Libby and Dan Lategan shared an opening stand of 65, the hosts slipped to 87-3 before Adam Hose and Brett D’Oliveira rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 98.
Both players reached half-centuries before the decisive contribution arrived from Ethan Brookes and Matthew Waite. The pair added 116 for the sixth wicket, to swing the match firmly in Worcestershire’s favour, with Brookes making 66 and Waite contributing 63.
Further contributions from Fateh Singh and Beyers Swanepoel helped Worcestershire reach 388 and secure a first-innings lead of 99.
Gloucestershire resumed their second innings still trailing and were unable to establish a meaningful lead. Singh made the breakthrough by trapping Tommy Boorman lbw before Matthew Waite removed James Bracey and Bancroft to leave the visitors in trouble.
Singh continued to impress, dismissing Hammond, Jack Taylor and Kristian Clarke as Gloucestershire’s resistance faded. Waite returned to bowl Graeme van Buuren, while Singh completed his maiden first-class five-wicket haul of 5-74 when Daz Ahmed edged to second slip.
Gloucestershire were eventually dismissed for 185, leaving Worcestershire requiring 87 runs from the 43 overs left in the day to seal victory.
The chase began poorly when Lategan departed without scoring, but Swanepoel counter-attacked with a brisk 35 to keep the target firmly under control. Gloucestershire claimed a handful of wickets through Van Buuren, but Worcestershire retained control of the chase.
Brookes remained calm amid gathering clouds and struck the winning boundary to complete a five-wicket victory that lifted Worcestershire above Middlesex in the Division Two table.
