A cricket legend has thrown his support behind football stars of the future in Winchcombe.

Former England cricketer Darren Gough has backed a new sports fund which will go towards footballers in Winchcombe Town Youth FC.

The £75,000 Gigaclear Rural Sports Club Fund will be supporting teams across rural communities, covering 26 counties on the company's full fibre network.

The fund will cover the cost of new training goals to help improve shooting skills among the budding player.

Club chairman Aaron Howe said: "Thanks to Gigaclear's Rural Sports Club Fund, we’ve been able to acquire proper training goals for all our teams.

"The support ensures our players can train effectively and reach their full potential.

"We're truly grateful."

Gough said: "Since launching the fund, it has gone from strength to strength, providing valuable support where it is needed most.

"It’s great to see so much kit and equipment being sent out to rural sports clubs such as Winchcombe Town Youth FC.

"I believe it will help make a difference to players now and to the rural sports teams of the future."

The youth team trains at Winchcombe Town HUB, and plays matches at Winchcombe Senior School.

Participating in both the Evesham and Cheltenham Leagues, the club offers schoolchildren the chance to take part in league and cup football.
