Forest Green Rovers were knocked out of the Papa John's Trophy by fierce rivals Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night after a dramatic penalty shootout.

Connor Wickham and Josh March both failed from the spot as The Robins progressed to the next round of the competition, having scored all their penalties.

The hosts had taken the lead in the 24th minute of normal time when Harry Boyes' pinpoint cross was nodded home by an unmarked March to break the deadlock.

Ryan Broom equalised for the visitors in the 69th minute as a cross from the left-hand side was headed into the net, before Cheltenham held their nerve from the spot to ensure they took the bragging rights from the Gloucestershire Derby.

"I would say on the balance, the draw was the right result in the 90 minutes," said manager Burchnall after the match.

"In the first half we were stronger, we played with a good intensity and created chances and I was pleased overall with how we went.

"Second half I was disappointed we didn't manage the game well enough when 1-0 up and that's a bad habit we have picked up.

"We fell too deep and we have done that when losing the lead in games this season.

"Then we lose the goal and on the balance it was probably fair. Then obviously you go to the lottery of a shootout and yes, it's disappointing to lose in that fashion."

The result came on the back of an encouraging display at Oxford United on Saturday, where Rovers picked up a battling point.

Whilst they remain bottom of the league, Jamille Matt's equaliser at least saw their brave display rewarded.

They now move on to their FA Cup second-round tie at home to non-league Alvechurch on Saturday.
