SCOTLAND’S most capped ladies' rugby player is helping to coach Pershore’s women and mixed touch section.

Donna Kennedy gained 100 caps before coaching in the Scotland ranks and for Worcester Valkyries.

She left Valkyries in 2017 to spend more time with her young family but recently agreed to take several training sessions at Pershore as a guest.

Kennedy, who is assistant coach for the women's Barbarians this year, said: “It was good to hear that the guys were enjoying my sessions and I was enjoying coaching them too.

"They are a great group of players and it is really good to be able to give back something to the sport I love.

"At Pershore I can do that and still have time for my job and family which works really well.”

Club chairman Richard George said: “We are focusing on developing a strong coaching team across all of the sections at Pershore and Donna provides incredible weight to the already significant coaching resources that we offer.

"RFU community rugby coach Jonathan Critchlow is coaching the men’s contact sides and we continue to invest in training coaches at every level within the club.”

Kennedy joins fellow coaches Ash White and Rob Nichols to develop the women's touch team and mixed touch section.

She said: “My sessions are focused on the fundamental core skills, especially passing and catching because no matter what level you play at these should always be practised.

"Often the way to success is doing the basics well and every player benefits from that approach.”

Touch section chairman Fizz Bewley said: “Touch is a rapidly-growing sport for all ages and abilities and Pershore is one of the leading centres for it in the region.

"That has been boosted tremendously with Donna joining us. We now have a fantastic coaching team to teach beginners and old hands how to get the best out of this great non-contact team game.”

Touch training for anyone aged 13 and over is at Pershore every Wednesday at 7.30pm or Sundays at 10am.
