CHAIRMAN Mike Burke has dismissed an altercation between Bromsgrove Sporting fans in their clash with Worcester City as “handbags”.

Police were called to the Victoria Ground last Tuesday following the fracas in City’s 3-2 victory over their landlords in the semi-finals of the Worcestershire Senior Urn.

The skirmish is understood to have involved two families of Sporting supporters and “lasted for about 10 minutes”.

No arrests were made and after reviewing CCTV over the weekend Burke felt there was no need to take any further action.

“We have looked at the cameras and it was just pushing between two families," Burke said.

“The stewards separated them and told them not to be stupid and grow up.

“It seemed strange to have an argument amongst your own fans but it was a bit of handbags.”

Last season’s Boxing Day battle between Bromsgrove and Worcester also saw crowd trouble. One Sporting fan had been ejected for allegedly setting off one of three green smoke bombs.

“We have banned before and we would have banned again if it had been justifiable but it was just handbags and they were separated fairly quickly,” Burke added.

Worcester were the host club for last week’s encounter and City chairman Steve Goode also played down the incident.

“I was told by some of the Bromsgrove officials that it was two families who don’t like each other and there was an alternation between the two,” Goode said.

“I was at the game and there was bit of trouble behind the one goal and it lasted for about 10 minutes.

“But the stewards went over and it was stopped.”

A police spokesperson said: “West Mercia Police were called at around 9.15pm on Tuesday (December 11), following a report of an altercation on the grounds of a football club in Birmingham Road, Bromsgrove.

“Officers attended and no arrest were made.”
