ASHLEY Williams insists Evesham United know which areas to improve in order to make the Jubilee Stadium a “fortress” this season.

Williams opened the scoring as the Robins dominated only to get pushed all the way in a 3-2 victory over Mangotsfield United in Southern League Division One South on Wednesday.

The midfielder powered home a loose ball from close range half an hour in but Evesham shipped a poor leveller within five minutes as Kye Simpson was allowed to scamper down the left before Mike Bryant poked home.

Joe Turley restored the home side’s lead a minute before half-time, starting and finishing a slick team move involving Cory Simpson and Steve Davies.

Evesham hit the bar twice in the opening six minutes of the second half with Marley Thomas driving against the woodwork at the near post before Archie Haskayne’s nod on the rebound came down off the underside of the goal frame before being scrambled to safety.

The Robins were on top for most of the second half and deservedly doubled their lead with four minutes remaining as Lewis Ellington swept in fellow substitute Tyrone Tucker-Dixon’s low centre.

That should have been that but Mangotsfield were gifted a second in stoppage time when Louis Britton waltzed through to roll inside the near post but there was no time for a grandstand finish.

“We definitely made hard work of it,” said Williams.

“At 3-1 we had a nice, comfortable lead and things like that second goal are areas for us to work on but we are aware of that.

“It is the second game in and when we look back to last season, we struggled to get results at home.

“It is essential for us to make this place a fortress this season, some of the football we played at times was really good and most importantly the players that came off the bench made a big impact.

“That’s a massive positive, having lads who can come in and affect the game like that. Overall, we’re happy with the three points.

“The gaffer likes clean sheets but we will work on that. It was a good day.”
