A FORMER Dudley MP has said the leader of Sandwell Council should have her Labour Party membership suspended after allegations she posted anti-Semitic tweets.

Ian Austin says he is amazed Cllr Yvonne Davies is still running the authority while she being investigated over messages she is said to have posted in 2018.

Under party rules, membership suspension would force her to resign as leader of the council.

Mr Austin, who quit Labour last year saying there was a ‘culture of extremism and intolerance’ in the party, said: “I’m surprised that the Labour Party hasn’t suspended Yvonne Davis after they received a complaint by another councillor.

“They have known about this since March and so I’m surprised they haven’t already done something about this.”

During 2018, Cllr Davis was said to have re-tweeted messages which suggested Israel had undue influence over the British government and was behind political attacks on the then Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

In response,  Mr Austin used Twitter to condemn them, saying: “How can people either not understand or not care how offensive and unacceptable conspiracy theories like this are after everything we’ve seen over the last five years?”

Cllr Davies has declined to comment on the allegations.

The former leader of Dudley Council, Peter Lowe, is also the subject of a council probe after claims he posted a message supporting the MP Rebecca Long-Bailey.

She was sacked as Labour’s shadow education secretary in June after sharing an interview linking the killing of George Floyd to Israel.

Leader of Dudley Council, Patrick Harley, said Cllr Lowe should also be suspended from the the Labour Party.

He said:  “I do think action should be taken against him. If he were in my cabinet I’d certainly be looking to remove from that position.”

Cllr Lowe was unavailable for comment.
