IT was truly inspiring to see so many members of the community turn up to see if they are a match to help eight-year-old Lily May Filmer who has leukaemia and needs a blood stem cell transplant.

Pershore Town Football Club allowed employees from DKMS, an international non-profit bone marrow donor centre, use of their club to carry out mouth swabs to find a potential match.

I can clearly remember the wonderful community effort to help Worcester schoolboy, Oscar Saxelby-Lee, who, thanks to donations of over £500,000,is in Singapore undergoing further treatment for which he was not eligible for on the NHS.

Within an hour of opening, 30 people had already been and gone at the football club to give a painless sample of their saliva.

Even one of the community police officers popped in while on duty and she told me more of her colleagues would pop in throughout the day to be sampled.

It is with such community spirit that mountains can be moved.

It comes down to what fundamentally connects us as human beings - our shared love for one another.

Imagine if everyone in the world was on the stem cell and organ register - many more people would still be alive today, enjoying life, bringing up kids during the short time humans have on this spinning planet.

Instead of killing others during war, how about we all come together for the common good of humanity?

I remember the late, great comedian Bill Hicks saying during a performance on, instead of firing missiles, how about using technology for a positive, to fire food into people’s mouths who are starving around the world, particularly in parts of Africa.

I know he was joking but the sentiment is there.

It is not too late for you to do your bit for Lily.

A second DKMS swab event will be held on Wednesday, March 4 at St Barnabas CE First and Middle School in Drakes Broughton.

Anyone between the ages of 18-55 and in general good health can register and give a simple swab sample to see if they are a match for Lily, or anyone else who needs a blood stem cell transplant.
