A RAIL company has apologised for its service to customers and is offering discounted rail fares this half term.

We reported last month that Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned West Midlands Railway (WMR) could lose its franchise amid complaints its performance has been “absolutely woeful.”

The company runs the service from Worcester to Birmingham.

Following a question posed during Prime Minister’s Questions by West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin, Mr Johnson said: “The bell is tolling for WMR if I hear my honourable friend correctly.”

Jo Martyr, 47, from St John’s, who commutes into Birmingham from Worcester’s Foregate Street station, said: “ I’ve been travelling into Birmingham for the last 15 years and I can honestly say the current service is the worst I’ve experienced.

“It’s heartening they’ve acknowledged the problems and let downs but how are they going to address the fundamental faults such as the lack of drivers?

"And where will the drivers come from to fill the shortage?"

Jonny Wiseman, customer experience director for West Midlands Railway, said: “We are sorry for the service our customers received last year.

“We are determined to put things right and have a plan to do so. In the meantime, it’s only right that we continue to compensate passengers that travel frequently with us.”

West Midlands Trains operates 1,300 services a day, manages 150 stations and provides over 75 million passenger journeys a year.

From Saturday, February 15 until Sunday, February 23, customers will pay 20 per cent less for off-peak tickets when buying online and travelling into Birmingham New Street, Snow Hill and Moor Street.

Tickets will be available to purchase for travel from this Saturday up to and including Tuesday, March 31.
