BROMSGROVE MP Sajid Javid has resigned as Chancellor.

The shock resignation comes as the Prime Minister carried out a Cabinet reshuffle, his first since his victory in December's general election.

It's reported that Mr Javid decided that rather than obey the PM to sack his advisory team, he turned down the second most important job.

The bombshell came after long-standing rumours of tensions between the ex-chancellor and Mr Johnson’s closest aide Dominic Cummings.

In August he had fired Mr Javid’s aide Sonia Khan and it appears Number 10 wanted to go further in keeping a closer eye on the chancellor.

Mr Javid said that “no self-respecting minister” could accept the condition being imposed.

“He has turned down the job of Chancellor of the Exchequer,” a source close to Mr Javid said.

“The Prime Minister said he had to fire all his special advisers and replace them with Number 10 special advisers to make it one team.

“The Chancellor said no self-respecting minister would accept those terms.”

Bromsgrove Advertiser:

Born in Rochdale, Lancashire to a British Pakistani family, Javid was raised largely in Bristol.

He studied Economics and Politics at the University of Exeter, where he joined the Conservative Party.

Working in banking, he rose to become a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank. Switching to politics, he was elected to Parliament in 2010.

Under the government of Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron he served as a Junior Treasury Minister before being promoted to Cameron's Cabinet as Culture Secretary and Business Secretary.

He went on to serve under Prime Minister Theresa May as Communities Secretary and Home Secretary.

After May's resignation, Javid stood for Leader of the Conservative Party in the 2019 leadership contest, finishing in fourth place.

The successful candidate, Boris Johnson, subsequently appointed Javid Chancellor.

It is beleived Mr Javid will be replaced by Rishi Sunak, the MP for Richmond in Yorkshire, who had previously been Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
