STEPPING into The Hadley Bowling Green Inn is like stepping back into history.

Pub Spy chose the pub to pop into for a pint recently and although a little difficult to get to, being on the outskirts of Droitwich, it was well worth the trip.

As the name suggests the 16th century half-timbered pub has its own crown bowling green, which is in fact one of two oldest crown bowling greens in Britain at a staggering 450 years old.

A little search on the pub's website reveals that there is a rumour Guy Fawkes himself stayed at the Inn, when he was visiting Robert Catesby at Huddington Hall to discuss the gun powder plot.

The pub has had its struggles in the past, including closure for a short period back in 2011, but under current owners Wadworth it is easy to see the place is currently flourishing.

Walking into the bar area, which is based round a circular bar in the centre, my first thoughts were it is rich in history, but at the same time modernised in a satisfying way.

The pub is bright, the decor colourful, and there is plenty of choice what to drink.

After a short deliberation I went for the Czech beer Staropramen, as it seems a bit of rarity to get it on tap these days. Although pricey at £4.80, it was definitely worth it as it is a quality drink.

It was the early evening when I popped in, but staff were quick to serve me and were very friendly.

I then selected a table in one of the seating areas, and took the opportunity to have a closer look around. On the walls are some unique pieces, including paintings celebrating the bowling green's history, as well as some funny pictures for revellers to enjoy.

In the background a mix of 1980s pop music and more modern tunes was playing but, as Pub Spy always appreciates, not at a volume that pub-goers had to talk loudly in their conversations.

Although I didn't eat during my visit the pub promises "a fantastic range of good quality, home-cooked meals with something to suit everyone". It is also pleasing to see it offers its own gluten free menu too.

The owners have made the pub into a weekend getaway and welcome business clientele, which can only be a good thing for its success. It has free wifi, however Pub Spy had to be cautious as to sign in you have three options - through Facebook, Twitter or by filling out a form. Knowing it could reveal their identity, Pub Spy thought best not to try it.

A good sign of a country pub is the little extras, and this Inn offers free newspapers and books to read, and board games for anyone wanting to have a little fun while enjoying their drink.

Outside families were also enjoying probably the last chance this year to sit outside on the pub garden benches, while their kids enjoyed the adventure play ground and space to run about.

And before I left I discovered the toilets were clean and tidy - always good to see.

As I was leaving the spacious car park was filling up so no doubt, there was a busy night ahead at the pub staff.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Hadley, and would recommend this place to anyone looking for a country pub.
