THE recent Battle of Evesham reenactment attracted more than 17,000 visitors over two days.

Mick Hurst, Battle of Evesham's director, said the event the biggest event to happen in Evesham and currently the largest annual two day event to happen in the Wychavon area.

He added it brought "huge footfall in Evesham town centre".

The event saw hundreds of volunteers get into suits of armour, pick up their pikes and other weapons and fought 'to the death' for the enjoyment of spectators at the free event.

The re-enactors were bringing the historic battle of August 1265 to life.

For the event shops and retail outlets were encouraged to decorate their shop windows to help get Evesham’s town-folk into the spirit of the festival.

Over 20 added some medieval magic to their shop-fronts and the judges chose A F Crookes Gents Hairdressers, near the railway station, as the overall winner, with a display of authentic helmets, swords, banners and shields.

Mr Hurst added: "Special mention also goes to Louise James Florist on the High Street for another colourful display.

"Thanks to all those who took part."

Meanwhile a competition was run to Find the Baron, with families challenged to find all 42 shields erected on lampposts around Evesham.

Dozens of entries were handed in and the winner, chosen at random, was Joshua Hosken, seven.
