HEREFORDSHIRE Scouts joined more than 4,000 others for the inaugural Shirejam gathering.

The event at Malvern’s Three Counties Showground included young people from Herefordshire and Worcestershire aged from six to 18 and more than 1,000 adult volunteers.

Shirejam, which celebrated Scouting's #SkillsForLife vision, featured six zones: adventure, splash, learn, bounce, create and survive.

There was also a main stage that featured live acts, a disco and a talent competition.

During the weekend young people undertook activities ranging from scuba diving, animals, zorbing and creative craft to climbing, aeroplanes, radio broadcasting and archery.

Among the dignitaries who visited Shirejam were the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire Lt Col Patrick Holcroft and and the Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire Countess Darnley.

The event was sponsored by PRG UK, Malvern Scaffolding, the Three Counties Showground, the Rowlands Trust, the National Lottery Community Fund and White Logistics.

Assistant District Commissioner Peter Dodman said: “Scouting in Herefordshire and Worcestershire continues to grow, supported by our 2,000 volunteers.

"Demand is also growing and we would love to open up additional Scout groups to meet this demand.

"Shirejam 2019 has shown the enjoyment and skills that adult volunteers can gain from Scouting and we look forward to welcoming new volunteers enabling us to continue this growth.

"Volunteering in Scouting is flexible and can fit around work and family commitments."
