RESIDENTS in a village near Worcester are outraged at cars speeding on their main road.

Ron Goldsby, 47, who has owned The Whitehall pub in the Bransford Road, Rushwick, for 13 years, said: “I’ve been stood behind the bar and seen souped-up cars whizz past.

“My concern is for my customers walking home at night as the road has no street lighting.

“I’m surprised we’ve not had any accidents so far.

“The issue has got worse as more people have moved to the area.”

The issue has created strong emotion on the Rushwick Village News Facebook group.

Maxine Amy said: “I’m still shocked at the speed people are going through the village -I nearly got smashed into by a van.

Kerry Dooner said: “I drive through the village every day on my way to work and have lost count of the cars that have overtaken me or been rooted to my behind.

“ Sometimes I feel I’m the only one sticking to the speed limit.”

Malvern Hills independent cllr, Daniel Walton, said: “I’ve received complaints from villagers about cars driving too fast.

“Some drivers speed up when they get to the centre of Branford Road then slow down at the last minute when they reach the railway bridge as there’s a short turn.

“I’ve suggested electronic signs warning drivers to slow down and more signage stating it’s 30mph.

“I don’t think speed bumps work as people drive around them.”

Worcestershire representative for the not-for-profit speed campaign group, 20’s Plenty for Us, Barbara Longmore said: “ When a driver gets into their car it’s like they’re cocooned from the outside world - drivers can be impatient these days.

“The only thing that truly works are speed cameras leading to fines.

“Drivers don’t like speed bumps but many rural areas have speed zones set at 20mph such as Hallow.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said: “If residents have speeding concerns, they can raise this to their councillor .

“We are always working with the police and the Safer Roads Partnership to ensure our roads are safe.”
