A BEST known cancer surgeon will be the main guest at a public meeting being held in Pershore this week.
Adel Makar will be appearing at the South Worcestershire Prostate Cancer Support Group (SWPCSG) that is being held on Wednesday, June 12.
Mr Makar, who is the lead cancer clinician for the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, has been working in the county since 2002. After gaining a medical degree in Cairo he moved to study and work in the London area, with specialist training at King’s College, followed by work as a lecturer at Guy’s and Thomas’ medical school.
As a consultant urology surgeon he has presided over the development of the Oncology Centre at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, which opened its doors in January 2015. Around 1,500 patients, including those with breast or prostate cancer, are treated at the centre each year.
SWPCSG is involved in fundraising to improve the treatment of prostate cancer patients in the county. In the last year the group has received support as it was the charity chosen by Pershore Town Mayor, Chris Parsons, in his year of office.
One of its main purposes is to offer advice and support to anyone affected by prostate cancer and several of the members have trained to be buddies to those undergoing or recovering from treatment.
There is free entry and anyone interested in learning more about developments in the treatment of prostate cancer in Worcestershire is welcome to attend.
The event will be taking place at the Wychavon Civic Centre, being held from 6.30pm.
