A SITE once earmarked to become the home of Worcester City FC will instead be an industrial site after planners agreed to build three commercial warehouses.

Worcester City FC originally had plans to build a new stadium on land at Nunnery Park, in Nunnery Way - near the KFC, Bluebell Farm pub and a petrol station that is currently being built.

But in December 2013, club bosses had to agree terms with developer St Modwen to scrap that deal -which saved them from being plunged into administration.

At the latest meeting of Worcester City Council’s planning committee, an application from St Modwen was considered to build three warehouses at the site, which would have access from Horn Hill Road.

The application was for each of the warehouses -which would vary in height between 11.7 and 13.7 metres - to have loading and parking areas, cycle storage and motorcycle stands. The units would also be surrounded by green space on all sides with the existing green buffer which surrounds the site retained.

Various bodies and authorities, including the police, Highways England and Natural England, were consulted and offered no objections to the scheme, while no neighbours sent in letters voicing any opinions on it.

During the debate on the application, Councillor Mike Johnson asked officers if St Modwen's had clients lined up to fill the units, but he was told by officers it was a speculative development. Councillor Chris Mitchell, the chairman of the committee, then pointed out that living nearby he knew neighbouring business units to this site "had all started to fill up".

Councillor Pat Agar said: "I think this is an excellent proposal, which will bring jobs to the city.

"I think that overall this is an excellent application and I don't think there is any substantial reason to refuse it."

After being put to the vote, the scheme was given unanimous approval by councillors.

Fans are still campaigning to bring Worcester City - which has been homeless for the past five years - back to the city. Worcester City FC’s plan to build a new ground at Perdiswell Park was turned down by the council last July and last September it was revealed Worcester City Supporters’ Trust’s appeal to the planning inspectorate proved successful, with that decision overturned.
