A COURT has approved a city council request to evict rough sleepers from a homeless camp, described as a 'mini-Glastonbury'.

Worcester County Court granted a possession order in relation to the settlement in City Walls Road today.

The people living at the camp were required to leave by the end of today as a result of the order.

If the rough sleepers are still at the site tomorrow, the council will be able apply for an eviction warrant, under which bailiffs will have the power to remove them.

A Worcester City Council spokesman said: "We are continuing to work to find a solution to this situation that is in the best interest of the rough sleepers’ welfare, and are working closely with homelessness support agencies."

Residents previously raised concerns about the camp, with one businesswoman describing it as a 'mini-Glastonbury'.

They complained about anti-social behaviour, along with a host of other issues, although the rough sleepers denied these claims and insisted that they were just trying to survive.

It is believed police officers seized knives and an axe at the site yesterday morning.

West Mercia Police was unavailable for comment.
