A SON has completed a 21-mile swimming challenge in aid of raising money for a charity supporting his father.

Simon Warburton, aged 52, from Worcester, has raised £630 for Alzheimer’s Research.

He was inspired to fundraise for the charity as his father, Tom Warburton, 80, has been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s.

Mr Warburton said: “There is no cure for Alzheimer’s, the disease progresses.

"Seeing someone you love with Alzheimer’s is like watching the light slowly go out in their eyes. It effects everyone some point in life.

“As we get older the problem is ongoing. We all know someone who has Alzheimer’s.

“Alzheimer’s Research is an amazing charity, like many others out there.”

Mr Warburton completed his challenge at Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Gym, in Droitwich Road. He visited the swimming pool every morning and arrived there early before work to complete his mile, which he completed within 35 minutes.

Mr Warburton is also training to be an Alzheimer’s Research Community Speaker. His role will include improving the public’s understanding and breaking down the stigma of dementia.

He will attend voluntary groups who fundraise for the charity, in addition to receiving cheques and talking about the research currently being undertaken.

Alzheimer’s Research is the leading dementia research charity. The charity is dedicated to funding scientific studies to find ways to treat, cure or prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s Research are currently working on a drug to cure Alzheimer’s disease by 2025.
