FED up residents in Bewdley have hung tinsel on some unsightly roadworks in their street, which they say have been left there for eight months.

Residents say barriers around a hole in the surface of Richmond Road were put up in the spring but have since been abandoned, causing traffic issues and even blocking one resident's driveway.

Now residents have decorated the roadworks for the festive period with red tinsel and a sign reading 'Happy Christmas dear hole in the ground, from all the residents of Richmond Road'.

Resident Pauline Geddie told The Shuttle: "The hole has been there since May and no one has yet done anything about mending it.

"It does hold traffic up. It's not a wide road so it makes it difficult to get past.

"We are now giving the hole the chance to celebrate Christmas. Perhaps it will still be there for its first birthday."

Pauline said residents contacted Worcestershire County Council about the roadworks in October, and were told the query had been passed on to the local works team to chase up.

Councillor Alan Amos, cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: "We have responded to the report of a void in Richmond Road.

"Our contractors attended the site and installed safety barriers. A full investigation was then undertaken with Severn Trent Water and we can now confirm that repair work will be carried out very soon."

Severn Trent said it had no record of a leak on that part of Richmond Road, but would urge residents to contact them with any concerns.
