THE festive spirit will be coming to Gornal this weekend, as the community comes together for the Christmas lights switch on.

The celebrations kick off in Lower Gornal village on Saturday, December 1, at 4:30pm before the lights are officially turned on by West Midlands Mayor Andy Street at 6pm.

Councillor Anne Millward, who is part of the Gornal Together Community group that organised the event, said: "People have worked really, really hard."

The Christmas tree was temporarily blown over on Thursday due to strong winds, but action has been taken to ensure it is safely secured for Saturday's festivities.

The event will see performances from Dynamics Rock Choir and and Little Angels, while stalls will celebrate all that local craftspeople have to offer.

This is the 5th event of its kind, and business and institutions in the village have joined together to make sure it is the biggest yet.

Bank Road will be closed from its junction with Abbey Road and Water Road will be closed from its junction with Bank Road from 6am to 9pm on December 1 to ensure the event runs smoothly.
