An independent village store in the foothills of the Black Mountains is on the shortlist of retailers in the running to be named Britain’s Best Small Shop of 2018.

Hopes of Longtown is referred to locally as a hub of information, having become a central point for locals to meet and chat as well as being a resource for directions to one of the many nearby tourist attractions.

The Best Small Shops competition, managed by the Independent Retailers Confederation (IRC), celebrates the commitment and creativity of independent retailers on the UK’s High Streets and the central role they play in their local communities.

Hopes of Longtown owner Christine Hope said they aim to make an economic difference to the area by providing an outlet to sell local produce.

“We are all about sharing our knowledge and hoping other small retailers can also carve out a point of difference," she added.

The winner will be announced at an event at the Houses of Parliament on November 13.
