OUR speaker on April 12 was Judith Ellis, from Chipping Campden History Society, who enlightened us on the subject of Campden House, built by the fabulously wealthy Sir Baptist Hicks, a London merchant. The house was built between 1612-1616 but was burnt down in 1645 during the Civil War. Apart from a fragment of wall, all that remains is the gatehouse, two banqueting halls (summer houses) and the much altered stables, now The Court House. Helped by a Lottery Grant, the History Society are undertaking a dig which has revealed internal plaster work figures, pieces of glass and floor tiles. The Landmark Trust will be holding a Heritage Open Day on the site (near the church) on 15/16th September when both banqueting houses will be open to the public - another excuse to visit this delightful town!

We meet every Thursday at 10am at The Boathouse, Evesham Rowing Club. Our talk on April 19 will be about Frank Muir and Denis Norden and on April 26 our member David Senior will be Cruising the Nile.
