A dreary November evening did not deter members and visitors to our monthly meeting. Transport arrangements were made for our Christmas lunch and members were informed of various activities. Worcestershire Federation celebrate their centenary in 2018 and members were encouraged to sign up for a Denman College weekend. The Group Carol Service is to be held at Wickhamford on December 17.

Betty Bowron reported on our progress in the County skittles, Pauline Bamber told us about our donation to Denman College and Lisa reminded us of the next Book Club meeting. The monthly flowers were won by Christina Bacon who also celebrated her birthday.

David Clarke, our speaker, delivered a fascinating account of eight women who were deported to Australia in 1787 on The Lady Penryn - her maiden voyage and ‘women only’ vessel. Out of 109 women on board, eight came from the Worcester area, their crimes all being minor by today’s standards, i.e. stealing food, clothes, all needed and necessary. The American War of Independence 1775-1783 curtailed convicts being sent west to America. Some of the eight had good lives in Australia or Norfolk Island and lived to a good age. Mr. Clarke was thanked by Pauline Bamber.

Our competition, An Australian Item, was won by Pauline Grainger with Elaine Griffiths and Josie Witts second and third.

Our next meeting in the Village Hall is Monday, January 16, 2017.
