POLICE in Gloucestershire have made 22 drink driving arrests during the fourth week of the annual Christmas crack down.

Of those arrested in the past week, 17 have been charged and are now facing a court appearance to start the New Year.

Since the campaign started on December 1, 65 arrests have been made including one in the Cotswolds.

Inspector Jason Keates, of the Constabulary’s Road Policing Unit, said: “While there is a danger that more people will drink drive in the immediate run-up to Christmas and the New Year, 22 arrests is a very high figure.

“It’s hugely disappointing people aren’t heeding the warning and considering the consequences of being caught.

“With the New Year celebrations fast approaching we know some people may be tempted to get behind the wheel under the influence and we will be running roadside tests throughout the county to ensure we catch those breaking the law.

“The only safe and sensible way to ensure you stay safe is to avoid drinking any alcohol if you are going to drive. “
