A NEW group is looking to set up an organisation to represent artists from Shipston and the wider Stour Valley.

The group, which met at the George Hotel in Shipston recently, is the brainchild of local abstract artist Howard Watson.

The aim of the group is to promote the work of local artists in a range of arts, from poetry to painting and to find somewhere from which to operate.

They are currently searching for a building that will meet their needs, to act as a space for artists to work in, but also to be used as a gallery, for education about the arts, for lessons, for rehearsals and for performance.

It is hoped to provide a service not only to the artists themselves, but for the wider community.

Mr Watson said: "There has long been a call for such an organisation in Shipston, and somewhere to work from - we've now decided to do something about it."

Shipston district and town councillor Philip Vial, who chaired the recent meeting, said: "It is good to see local creative people coming together for the benefit of the wider community."

A steering committee has been formed, which as well as consisting of two painters, a sculptor and a graphic designer, also includes people with business and education backgrounds.

The group, which is being backed by Warwickshire County Council, next meets at The George at 6pm on Friday, January 21. For details and further information contact Howard Watson on 01608 661965.
