A major archaeology festival in the Cotswolds is making its return.
The Gloucester Festival of Archaeology will run from Saturday, July 18 to Sunday, August 2, 2026, featuring a packed programme of talks, tours, and hands-on experiences exploring the city’s rich past.
The two-week event will take place at venues across Gloucester, many of which are normally closed to the public, offering a rare glimpse into the city’s hidden stories.
Marc Waters, a volunteer at Gloucester Civic Trust, said: "The Festival of Archaeology showcases everything that makes Gloucester such an extraordinary historic city.
"By working alongside our heritage partners, sponsors and volunteers, we're able to create an inspiring programme that encourages people of all ages to explore, discover and celebrate our shared heritage."
The festival begins with a Family Day designed to turn the city centre into a heritage playground.
Activities include a mini excavation outside Gloucester Cathedral, a 3D archaeology trail along the Gate Streets, and a festival village at The Folk of Gloucester.
The programme will also feature a variety of expert talks covering topics such as King Henry VIII, the Stone Age, Gloucester’s rivers, and the Roman Colonia.

Visitors can join guided walking tours, see an archaeological dig in action, enjoy a quiz at Llanthony Secunda Priory, and take part in a community picnic at St Oswald’s Priory.
For those looking for something a bit different, there will even be archaeology-themed cocktails served at Crimson Spire inside Hotel Indigo.
The festival is organised in partnership with Gloucester Civic Trust, Gloucester BID, Gloucester Cathedral, and other heritage groups.
